A Stroll on Washington Square; The Nacogdoches University Building Courtyard and Gardens
The garden was designed by Jeff Abt in 1990, as a 19th century garden with period appropriate plants. The courtyard resembles those found during the Republic of Texas. The abundance of rose varieties captivates the visitor’s attention while strolling throughout the garden and courtyard. First are the Hermosa roses with a lavender-pink color, very fragrant, double cupped, and beautifully shaped. The next rose is the Gilbert Nabonnand also known as a tea rose. These large bloom roses range in color from shades of peach to a deep pink. The fragrance of the tea rose is a sweet and intense. During your time in the garden, you will also find a rose by the name of Madame Joseph Schwartz also known as the White Duchess. The White Duchess has an intense fragrance. Its white color is a variant of the pink Duchess de Brabant. The garden’s next rose is a green rose, which has a peppery scent. Continue on your stroll and you will come across Duchess de Brabant similar to that of the White Duchess, as well as the Cramoisi Superior which is variant of a red China rose. The final rose in the garden is the Louis Phillipe a dark red China rose. After enjoying the beautiful roses, wander along the paved walkway formed of memorial pavers honoring important individuals associated with the Nacogdoches University Building. Throughout the grounds, are multiple memorial benches, statues, and a sun dial placed in honor of donors, prominent citizens, and organizations who have supported the Nacogdoches University Building.
